Latrines in Southern Nicaragua
Construction of Latrines was one of SHEAF's projectc. It is necessary to help protect wells, soil and the nearby river from contamination. The state of some of the latrines is depicted in the photo. Moreover some families had no access to latrines at all. This is a shared project, with an NGO from Spain providing the bulk of the funding and SHEAF contributing their share, this time with help from the Gay Lea Foundation.
Phase 1 of the latrines wacompleted by the end of 2016. A SHEAF delegation visited the project in early 2017. It was gratifying to realize that 70 families, who had no latrines or latrines in very poor condition, now had access to a proper ventilated latrine. The location of the latrine took into consideration proximity to the houses, water supply such as wells or cisterns and susceptibility to flooding. In 2018 Phase 2 was completed with another 50 Latrines being built. Watch the video to see a board member exploring a latrine.
Latrines in Central Nicaragua
Thirty Latrines were built in the small community of Pitahaya, close to Muy Muy, Matagalpa. This community is very poor. They have no potable water close to their homes, no electricity and until recently (2019) no latrines or latrines in very poor shape. At least now they have thirty new latrines.
Thw oldest man in the village (82) stands proudly in front of his new latrine.
